I hope you’ve all enjoyed the last few weeks of the holidays. I spent much of mine driving and shoveling snow getting some quality time in with friends and family. It’s been a few weeks since I’ve last posted, we can thank Finals for that. And now that we’re looking into the new year, like many others, I’ve got a a renewed feeling of productivity and what I hope will be a big push towards some lifetime goals. Christmas and New Years came and went so quickly, now I’m just trying to more or less get my life together.

2011 Will have a few things in store for me, to start off I should be graduating come May. Rutgers is all I’ve known for the last four years and I’m eager and anxious to get out and fend for myself. People often look over the fact that I will be a US Army Officer come May also, I’ll be a Second Lieutenant. I’ve joined the New Jersey National Guard, branching Military Intelligence. I chose not to go into the Active Duty Army for many reasons, one of my most ambitious being my one day career photography. My military journey will take me to Arizona first, spending around 5 months in Fort Huachuca learning my trade.

Ever since my visit to Europe last Spring Break, I’ve caught the desire to travel. This Spring Break I’ll be down in Louisiana for Mardi Gras, a good way to end my senior year I’d like to think! Other than Arizona I’m really hoping to fill this year with a ton of miles traveled. During all of this I’ve got all my goals in photography. I’m trying to make this a big year, it’ll be tough going but I’ve got great support and there’s no other way I’d like to chase this. I’m not looking to share what those goals are right now, but if I manage to pull them off 2011 is going to be awesome.

Camille Marotte is one of those people that I always go back to for inspiration and general eye candy. Video has very recently become one of my go to places for ideas. Perhaps one day I’ll take the time to learn the trade, though for now I’m going to let people like Camille Marotte inspire me.

His work is aesthetically everything I seem to like. If only my work translated as beautifully as his. One thing that always amazes me is that there is only a few years gap between my age and his, as well as that of other upcoming creative artists. Sometimes I end up thinking whether I’ll be producing work of such caliber by that time. This all definitely gives me something high up to strive for.

So it’s nearing midnight on a Rutgers’ Wednesday and I have an exam in the morning. I really should be studying frantically about Abnormal Psychology, but to be honest with you there is so much I would rather be doing. This last weekend I assisted a very pregnant Boss Lady document a wedding in New Salem, New York. It must have been a 2 hour drive total from here in New Brunswick. I haven’t had the time to look through these photos and the whole first half of the week I was trying to play catchup so I would get a chance to. I just couldn’t resist today, consequences for my exam will be clear, but I’m not too concerned. I really do hope there will be a time in my life where I would have ample amount of time to give to my photography.

I really don’t know what, if anything, I’ll do with my Major/Minor. Though, I do know what I want to be doing.

This video is actually a few months old. The video trend in Full Frame DSLRs is IMHO here to stay. It produces such a lovely effect will keeping entrance fees very low. The sudden surge of real and legitimate commercial work done on these platforms is fascinating. Indie and amateur film makers now can achieve those upper tier looks with enough patience and practice. Camille Marotte of Neohaven works o a relatively shoestring budget – most expensive components probably being models and wardrobe, but creates big contract work. Throughout the work he uses only the 5d MkII and a 50mm. The use of fine detail paints such a delicate world in this video, I can’t get enough of this emerging style. The use of detail makes me want to shoot something similar with stills. I’m giddy for the color correction. I can’t wait to incorporate more like this into my own work.

Sometimes I think about what the perfect photoshoot would be like. While this piece is relatively old, IMHO this is probably as best as it could ever get. The Megan Fox factor is a no brainer. Greg Williams filmed this on a RED and the stills taken from this video were used in a 10 page editorial in Esquire. While that is absolutely incredible, I’m more taken back by the absolute seamless fluidity of it all. Careful lighting, precious camera placement and effortless environmental engagement. Watching Greg Williams’ moving portraits for Esquire make me consider the many aspects of a simple photoshoot and change my expectations of them. I could probably spend all day talking them up.
