Just a few words about working with an absolutely fantastic team. I say it all the time, surrounding yourself with the right kinds of people can just launch you creatively. When the vibe is right it really doesn’t feel like work. I dream about just shooting projects like this every night. Everyone is just there to take good pictures, drink wine and chill out.

I spent much of the summer reflecting on how i thought about images. I spent so much time shooting things like weddings that I became very one track minded in my work. Trying to get away from that and start expanding my default I’ve made a conscious effort to shoot a little differently from what I’m used to. It was always just so easy to just drench an image with light and let the sun become such a prominent feature in all of my images. But versatility demands much more than that. It’s been a recent theme of mine to play with shadows to create depth and character and to see how drastically the mood can change with just a little bit less light.

I’ve been playing with technique, if all goes well I may get the chance to create something a little more extensive with maybe even some narrative to it. Don’t forget to click through to see a few more images from a recent photoshoot!

It’s been difficult not to share this set with the world any sooner. I’ve been all kinds of excited about this project since way back in May when Keesean Moore of Brim & Soul (formerly known as De Bas En Haut) emailed me about working on some sort of lookbook for the Fall and Winter seasons. Keesean and I actually went to High School together way back when, and I can tell you that neither of us would have guessed we would be collaborating on something like this. Ever.

Keesean describes Brim & Soul as a boutique for risk takers with an affinity for the past. Let’s get it straight from the beginning, this isn’t some hipster run wannabe fashionista sartorialist chasing hole in the wall shop. This boutique is curated painstakingly by Keesean himself. What struck me the most about pieces were Keesean’s nearly obsessive connection to them, to the point where he could barely imagine selling them. I’m not going to embarrass myself by trying to talk about fashion, because I would get laughed of the internet, but I think what Keesean pulled together for this season is some premium grade items.

We got together and went hard on this project early in August with a late September shoot date. It’s amazing how everything simply fell together, for one of the first times in my pursuit of professionalism I felt like that this project was being done right. When we chose our crew and cast we surrounded ourselves with people who we knew had distinctive styles and tastes along with fantastic work ethic. One of my goals since I started to take photography very seriously was to work with a larger team on more complex photoshoots. Having individuals dedicated on specific tasks and creative decisions helped a lot in letting me really hone in on what I was trying to contribute to the shoot. It was nearly two months of planning for a simple two day shoot. I’m just so freaking happy how it turned out.

It came out to be about a 60 image set, with around 20 going into a limited run printed lookbook for the launch party for Brim & Soul. Be sure to check out some of the images from the lookbook after the jump!

November marks the end of alternate side parking. It’s about now that once the sun hits the high point at noon then darts for the horizon. My favorite time of the year is when the sun just hangs really low in the sky covering everything in that orange-gold light, but that time of year was three months ago. I woke up this morning and it was 35 degrees out, the little snowflake in my car’s dashboard came on. Clearly it’s winter. Looks like I’ve got to get as much of the sun in as I can before it turns all kinds of gray and dreary.

This past Sunday I got a photo shoot in with Liz, Hanna and Morgan. I’m convinced that it was the last of the warm sun we’re gonna see until the Spring. It was a good way to see the Summer go, the sun hung around as long as it could and let me snap some really crisp shots. A setting sun coming through a wood line is about as good as it gets in my book. I can’t wait until I get to share more of what I shot that day.

Nothing beats the refreshment of a last minute photoshoot. Giselle approached Morgan and I looking for some fresh photos. Initially I intended to use a car as some kind of prop, though Morgan had the great idea of heading North to Parsippany and showing us some of his hometown scenery. So there we were, jumping in Giselle’s car headed to a fresh location. Apparently within spitting distance behind Morgan’s house are the remnants of a Native American rock shelter, carefully named “The Rock House”. It’s great that they cared enough to preserve a nice chunk of woods for it, Morgan seemed to have plenty of childhood memories.

With photoshoots I always try to do some sort of surveying beforehand, even if that may be a map reconnaissance via the wonder of Google. Though this time we arrived on location and I had no idea what was in store for us. While Morgan and Giselle were setting up I took a quick peek around the woods and tried to determine where the light was coming from. The area was great, there was an abundance of rock formations and uneven terrain. However the sun was starting to dip behind the hills, leaving us maybe 30 minutes of shooting time. Realizing timelines like that is tough and we had to get to work if we wanted any sun in our photographs. We were pretty much chasing the sun the whole time.

From this set I think I snapped 100 frames. I’m definitely happy the way they turned out. I was going for a more rugged feel to the photographs, using the flat light and untidiness of the woods to my advantage. Morgan recorded some good footage and I’m really looking forward to see what he comes up with.
